Homework For Parents

For
Parents of children in
Room 8

Spelling

Spelling lists are made up each Monday from words that the children have corrected in their written work during the past week.

If they do not have ten words of their own then they use words from the Topic Lists that I put up on the Whiteboard each week

They should have the words that they get right on Monday night ticked. If necessary you can test them on the following nights of the week to establish words that they got wrong or were not sure about and tick them when you think they’ve got them.

These words will be tested on Friday at school by a buddy and signed by me.

Reading

Each Monday the children select a book from the school library for the week. If they have a library book or material at home that they are keen to use instead that is fine.

This is not meant to be instructional reading, but rather stories that they can read easily to gain confidence and fluency. It should only take about a quarter of an hour.

On Friday I collect the Homework books and have a look at their reading log stuck in the back of their homework book and sign it.

Maths

On Tuesday the children are given a Maths worksheet to stick in their Homework book. This is related to basic facts i.e. “Tables”. The work is marked and collected the next day to be signed by me.

Sentences

On Wednesday the children are given five words related to the current Topic under study at school. These are to be put into a sentence each so that they end up with five good sentences not one sentence using all five words!!!!!! If possible it is good if they make a little story with them.

The aim is to get the spelling right and use capital letters for the beginning of sentences and big fat full stops at the end. They also need to use capitals for special names.

This work will be marked by the children the next day, collected and signed by me.

Projects

Occasionally the children will be asked to research a topic at home and bring the results to school either in the form of notes or as a completed piece of work.

Homework by email
All those parents who have returned the slip at the bottom of the Room 8 Newsletter will get the homework for the current week emailed to them on the Sunday before the week starts.
